Having a small blanket they can wrap up in a that's just big enough to keep them warm without crawling under the covers, can make late night studying seem more bearable. Dorms can get really chilly during the winter months and a small throw blanket made of fleece or polyester is the perfect addition to a gift basket for your student. They come in a range of prices, depending on make and manufacturer. If you have a few extra dollars, some companies will add a college logo or the students initials for a personalized throw.

Most kids in college miss good home cooking and sending them some of their favorite foods is a great idea. You can send them a basket full of the makings for an easy meal, perhaps some tasty baked goods, or go with a basket full of tasty and comforting snack foods. No doubt they'll be thrilled with all the tasty treats that you have sent them.

Some alarms are soothing and wake you up slowly, some are rubberized to make sure they still work if you throw them, and there are even vibrating alarms, which are great for students that have roommates.

Music: College students love music, there is no doubt about that! Whether your son or daughter listens to CDs, an iPod or an mp3 player, include a selection of music items from their favorite artists. Or if they do not have the player itself, they will love you forever for including one in a gift basket. If you don't know what kind of music they listen to, or whether or not they have a particular selection, include a music gift card instead. Then, they can pick out exactly what they like.

Helpful College Supplies: There are probably quite a few college supplies that your freshman needs, and these supplies go great in college student gift baskets. Even if they took supplies with them, they probably go through them fast. Add in some nice pens, plenty of paper or notebooks, and perhaps even a nice day planner to help them stay organized. It's easy to go through supplies fast in college, so these college supplies are definitely something they will need and can help to make up part of the care package that you are sending to them.

Gift Cards and Certificates: Most college students don't have a lot of money, so adding in some gift cards and gift certificates is a wonderful idea. They may not have the money to purchase some of the things they need, which is where some of these gift cards can really be helpful to your college student. To treat them to a nice dinner, add in a gift certificate to a restaurant, which is sure to thrill them and give them a good meal to enjoy as well.
